Wharves Along the Schuylkill

During the 19th century, wharves in this neighborhood connected the Schuylkill Navigation, a canal that ran down from coal country, with the rest of the world. Coal was shipped from here up and down the East Coast. By 1900, railroads had replaced shipping, and many wharves were removed or filled in.
