Rockwood Hall Ruins

Pleasantville, United States

On this spot stood Rockwood Hall, the summer home of William Rockefeller, brother of John D. Rockefeller. The landscape was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and includes several rare specimens of European Beech tree. After William Rockefeller's death in 1922, the estate was made into a country club, which subsequently failed. The 204 room mansion was then acquired and destroyed in 1941-42 by William's nephew, John D. Rockefeller Jr. Today, only the foundation remains. Rockwood Hall was donated to New York State in 1999, and is now a part of the Rockefeller State Park Preserve.
