You are standing before an uncommon geologic condition that formed a very unique biological features — a freshwater sedge bog. A bog is characterized as a type of wetland or marsh that is poorly drained, has a wet or spongy surface, which contains an accumulation of partially decomposed plant material called peat. In most cases water accumulation within a bog is due to heavy precipitation, high groundwater, and poor drainage.
