Calaboose
Telluride, United States
The Calaboose, from Spanish calabozo meaning dungeon, was originally located in the center of town on South Spruce Street near the town's red light district. The Calaboose was constructed in a manner similar to a log cabin, using stacked 2 inch lumber, with overlapping ends at the corners. This method of construction was also used for jails in Silverton and Mancos. A substantial amount of historic graffito exists on the interior of the building. The most prominent name is Charles Hasselgrave, which appears in both cells numerous times, in 3 inch letters. This building was moved several times in the 1970 and 1980 s. The structure was restored, stabilized, and placed on a foundation in this location in 1987.
