Kansas City Workhouse
Kansas City, United States
Built in 1897 with limestone quarried onsite by the prisoners, this castle-like building served Kansas City as a workhouse till 1918. Both male and female prisoners who had committed minor crimes such as public drunkenness, pickpocketting, and general vagrancy served short term labour sentences here. It became city offices after the prisoners were moved out to the municipal labour farm, and then was abandoned in the 1970s.
