A Ship's Propeller

On the 9th of December 5, 1897, the S. S. George W. Morley, a steam freighter , was sighted burning on Lake Michigan. Although the entire crew was rescued, this 192 foot freighter, built in 1888, in Michigan, sank - Only 150 yards from the foot of Greenwood Avenue in Evanston. 72 years later, on August 26, 1969, a team from the Bell and Howell divers club recovered ships propeller. The Evanston Fire Department brought the two and a half ton propeller to shore. Ir was donated to the Evanston Historical Society as a reminder of the lake steamers, which are no more.
