The plaque adorning this 15th century holy well reads: "A.D. 1921. This ancient baptistry with adjoining lands was presented by Rear Admiral Sir Charles John Graves Sawle, Baronet, R.N.M.V.O. (of Penrice) to the church wardens of the Parish of St. Austell to be preserved by them as trustees for the inhabitants of the parish. In memory of his only son, Richard Charles Graves Sawle Esquire, Lieutenant of the Coldstream Regiment of Footguards, who was killed in action at Ypres on the 2nd November 1914."
