Sprayberry Rock

Marietta, United States

This rock bears circular and patterned markings that were rubbed into its surface by prehistoric Indians some 4000 years ago. The material of the rock is known as "soapstone" and was used by early North American inhabitants to make bowls. The beginning of these bowls can be seen on the side of the stone. Sprayberry rock was originally located someone 100 feet to the southwest. It was discovered during construction of this First Atlanta office, and its markings and historical dating were verified in February 1984 by Mr. Lawrence W. Meier, archeologist for Cobb County. In recognition of its historical significance, First Atlanta moved the Sprayberry rock to its present location in August 1984 to preserve it.
