David Glasgow Farragut

Kittery, United States

The Shipyard Commander's quarters was constructed at the behest of Commodore Issac Hull in 1814 and has served as the residence for the senior officer assigned to the shipyard. Designed by John Locke of Portsmouth and constructed for under $3500, the "T" shaped main dwelling measures 140 feet long and 69 feet wide. Quarters A stands as the oldest building on the Shipyard. The iron fence that runs along Charles Morris Avenue was cast on the Shipyard and erected in 185I. Admiral Farragut, the first Admiral of the Navy, died in Quarters A while visiting his relatives, Commodore and Mrs. Pennock, in 1870. A plaque to his memory can be seen on the fence in front of Quarters A.
