Thresher Memorial Chapel

Kittery, United States

Construction of a Shipyard Chapel began in 1941. In 1942, however, construction was abruptly stopped due to a lack of military funds. The construction of all chapels was ceased by order of the Secretary of the Navy as a way to conserve capital for the war effort. The chapel was completed shortly after and dedicated by Bishop G. Bromley of Boston. The Chapel was named for USS THRESHER (SSN 593) that was lost with all hands onboard on April 10, 1963.
