Colonel Thomas William Symons, United States Army Corps of Engineers, 1849-1920, graduate of West Point Military Academy 1870. As a 1st lieutenant he surveyed the Columbia River from Fort Spokane to the mouth of the Snake River in 1881. As a captain and co-chief engineer of the Portland District in 1890, he directed the survey of the Columbia River from Canada to the mouth of the Okanogan River.
