The Miner's Grip

Bedworth, United Kingdom

Bedworth is an ex-mining town. This statue, carved in black Kilkenny limestone, is an enlargement of a cast taken from one of Bedworth's oldest ex-miners squeezing his hands around a clay cylinder, in the way that he would grip his pick axe down't pit. It thus represents the toil, rather than the profits, of the local working populace. Some think that it suggests a different kind of structure.
