Belvelly, Ireland
Belvelly Castle is a prime example of a Norman Castle built by the Hodnett family in the 14th century. The Hodnetts were an English family who originated from Shropshire. In 1581, the castle was taken over by Sir Walter Raleigh who described it at the time as broken down and he carried out many changes which made Belvelly Castle a modern Castle at this time. In 1636, it came into the possession of the Barry Family and in 1647, Roger Boyle the Earl of Broghill garrisoned his troops here during the confederate war. Heigh 70-80 feet. Width at base 30 feet. The present bridge was built in 1807.
