The construction of this park and the dam was a Works Progress Administration Project (WPA). The name was Marshall Creek Dam Project. At the time it was the largest dam project in the State of Kansas. The National Park Services was involved in the design of the park and the structures. Construction of the park and dam began in December 1935.
