Cardington Hangers

Bedford, United Kingdom

Famous Hangers that have housed famous airships and are still used today. As you look at the Hangers the one on the right, housed the R100 airship owned by Vickers Handley Page. Neville Shute Chamberlain worked on the R100, but after the disastrous crash of the R101, he took up a writing career under the name Neville Shute. The one one the left, Government owned, housed the ill fated R101 Airship that went down in flames in France on its maiden voyage. All the bodies of the crash are immortalised and are buried in a tomb in Cardington village cemetery approx 1 1/2 miles away. Cardington village is 1 mile behind the Hangers as you look at them
