James Morgan Hiott
Beaufort County, United States
James Morgan Hiott and Christiana Griffin Hiott owned Old Miller Plantation in Bluffton off of Hwy 46. He was an attorney, a planter and the South Carolina State Legislator representing Beaufort County, SC. James Morgan Hiott joined the 11th SC Infantry at 17 during the Civil War. He credits being a Confederate Soldier as the key to his success in life because he went several years without adequate food, clothing, shelter, and walked most of the way to and from Virginia during and after the war. He said he learned to improvise, to make the best with what he had available, to walk with no shoes in the Winter and without a warm coat. He learned expert marksmanship and to make every shot count due to ammunition shortages. James said to complain did no good so he just found some way to succeed with what he had and this is what he credits his success in his adult professional and business life.
