Soon after nightfall the division, with the exception of Clayton's brigade was withdrawn to the crest of Missionary Ridge. One half of the brigade, was on picket duty at the foot of the ridge, and in rifle pits part way up the ridge. The other half took position between Stoval on its left, and Adams' (Gibson) on its right. To cover the space assigned the men were formed in one rank, some 6 to 10 feet apart. The ridge being carried by the assault of the enemy the afternoon of the 25th, the brigade retreated toward Mission Mills.<br> Casualties. Killed 16; wounded 93; missing 150.
