Paremata Barracks

Porirua, New Zealand

Built in 1847, too late to see action in the New Zealand Wars of the early 1840's. The barracks was only in operation for less than a year before collapsing in the 1848 earthquake due to serious defects in the design, notably the fireplaces backed onto the magazine and the bricks were of low quality. It continued to be used until another earthquake in 1855 brought down the top story and left the remainder damaged.
