The Shore House

Point Pleasant Beach, United States

Built in the 1800s with nine guest rooms on the second floor, and originally called the West Point Hotel, this is one of the oldest operating taverns in New Jersey. In its hey day this tavern served as a meeting place for many local townspeople and as a stage coach stop, offering food and lodging to passengers and stabling for horses. In later years racing became a favorite pastime here, with spectators cheering thoroughbreds on from the tavern to the oceanfront finish line. It is believed survivors from the shipwreck "John Minturn" (February 15, 1846) were brought to the Inn for shelter and medical attention. Thirty nine passengers, including the Captain and his wife were lost to the sea that stormy day.
