The Signal Tree Plaque

Akron, United States

Indian Signal Tree — a more than 300-year-old Bur Oak. It was reportedly shaped by American Indians to “signal” the southernmost point of the Cuyahoga River, as well as the start of the eight-mile Portage Trail where canoes were carried from the Cuyahoga to the Tuscarawas River. As noted on its plaque: “Trees with unusual shapes were often used by Indians as landmarks to identify important trails.”
