On January 13, 1895 the Seth Low and a companion barge were being towed from Perth Amboy, NJ, to Boston, MA. Stormy seas caused the Seth Low's towline to break. The barge quickly began to drift. Although Captain B.W. Dottridge tried to maneuver the boat, it ran into a sandbar some 700 yards from shore and began to sink.
