The Road to Salisbury Town

This road connected Pemberton Hall Plantation to two places of interest to Colonel Isaac Handy. It led to Handy Hall, the neighboring plantation which Isaac gave to his son George in 1750, and to Salisbury Town, which Colonel Handy helped to establish in 1732. Overland transportation was difficult and uncomfortable in the 18th century. The few roads that existed were little more than cart paths through the woods or along the edges of fields. People traversed the roads on foot, ox-cart, or horseback, but there was really no good way to travel by land.
