The Newport Transporter bridge is one of 17 of this type built around the world; 6 of these bridges remain in working order. The bridge was built to help attract John Lysaght to build a rolling steel mill on the east bank of the Usk. Construction started in 1902 with the bridge officially opening in 1906.
