Coal Duty Boundary Marker, Dartford Road/Maiden Lane

In 1861 the "London Coal and Wine Duties Continuance Act 1861" was passed, requiring a tax to be paid on all coal entering the London Metropolitan area. Marker posts were erected to show the boundary within which the tax was payable.
