Massanutten is one of the mountains formed 275 million years ago when the African plate collided with North America, causing the valley floor to fold and ripple. Our mountain is shaped like a basket or canoe, with q concave kettle area and the forks of the Shenandoah on each side. The bowl is a result of limestone, shale, and slate eroding away, leaving the harder, erosion resistant sandstone along the ridge.
