Oscar Cates Family Monument
Township of Anderson, United States
On May 24th, 1918, Oscar Cates purchased lots at Maplewood Cemetery. Soon after, he made arrangements to have a very large piece of granite shipped from England to be carved on the grounds for his family's monument. There was a hold-up because of the war, but the granite finally arrived and the stone was set in place. The sculptor arrived soon after, and the marker was designed and carved by hand. Oscar was buried in 1937, 19 years after the work was completed. His daughters followed years later.
