St. Nicholas Church, Slaughterford

Chippenham, United Kingdom

A relatively new church for this part of the world, having only been built in 1823. The reason for this is that Oliver Cromwell and his troops destroyed the church that was previously on the site on their way to Bristol during the Civil War. As a result the denizens of Slaughterford had to walk up to Biddestone every Sunday to worship at the St. Nicholas Church there. Being kind Christians, the parishioners of Biddestone added a gallery and an external staircase to their church so that they wouldn't have to mix with the parisoners from Slaughterford.
