Building Bridges: The Creative Canal (Plaques to transport, wildlife and engineering) This artwork, designed by Paul Pickford and Brian Raymond, incorporates ideas developed by young people during investigation into the engineering, heritage and environment of the Rochdale canal at a series of visual arts workshops and research days. The cogs and circular panels are symbolic of the function of the canal in engineering water. The position of the cogs signifies the movement of the water on its journey from Sowerby Bridge to Manchester, following the canal route represented in the shape of its inside edge.
