An attorney before the war, he lead the 33rd Tennessee infantry it Shiloh, where he was severely wounded. In 1864, he was captured by the Union forces and sent to prison. On his release in 1865, he was promoted to brigadier general and served under Nathan Bedford Forrest until the end of the war. He served as president of the M & O railroad and in 1880 was unsuccessful in seeking the Democratic nomination for Governor of Tennessee.
