Robert Clinton "Bobby" Richardson

Born August 19, 1935, Richardson became one of the most famous sports figures from Sumter community. After playing shortstop for the 1952 state championship American Legion team, he signed with the New York Yankees on June 12, 1953 , and made his major league debut on August 5, 1955 at age 19. He would go on to play on four world championship teams with the Yankees. He was named a seven time All-Star second baseman and a five time gold glove winner. He was also selected most valuable player in the 1960 World Series and holds or shares five World Series records. Richardson retired from professional baseball in 1966 before serving as head baseball coach at the University of South Carolina from 1972 1976. He became head baseball coach and athletic director at Coastal Carolina College for three years and closed out his coaching career by serving from 1987 to 1990 as athletic director, head baseball coach, and assistant chancellor at Liberty University. Richardson remained active in his community and Christian organizations throughout his career. He continued as a role model and an inspiration to the residents of Sumter.
