Avian Evolution

This sculpture, titled "Avian Evolution" was created by St. Petersburg artist Paul Eppling in 1996, when Polypack, Inc. (owner of the property) moved into their current location. Eppling specializes in working with scrap metal, usually car parts, and his creations are found throughout the Tampa Bay area. This sculpture depicts six giant, bipedal, anthropomorphic lizard creatures. One creature has glass wings strapped to his arms. He is riding a unicycle, while three other creatures are pushing him up an incline, while two others pull on cables to launch him into flight. Other notable Eppling sculptures include "Security Lizard", a giant lizard sitting on top of the St. Petersburg Police garage, and visible from I-275, and many sculptures, including a giant scrap metal armadillo, found throughout Boyd Hill Nature Preserve.
