Gammelstads Kyrka

Gammelstad, Sverige

This medieval church was first inaugurated by Archbishop Jakob Ulfsson on the 29th of June, 1492, according to local tradition. The day was Peter's Day, and the apostle has been of great importance to the town since, notable in the city coat of arms. The church is constructed of natural stone, as well as brick for the window and door frames. Local tradition tell that every citizen in the parish was to supply one rock each. The church and the church village of red cottages around was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in December 1996.
