Graves' Battery

Dover, United States

The Confederate outer defenses, in February 1862, formed a 3-mile broken line around Fort Donelson and Dover. The Confederates cut trees in front of the entrenchments to construct an abitis, a formidable obstacle to the enemy. Field artillery batteries took commanding positions along the ridges. Graves' Kentucky Battery, supported by the 41st Tennessee Infantry, occupied this ridge. On February 13, the battery fired upon Union forces as they moved eastward toward the Confederate left. On the 15th, Graves' Battery moved to the Wynn's Ferry Road area and participated in the break-out attempt.
