St. Brendan‘s Cross
Ballydavid, Ireland
This cross marks an important place of St. Brendan veneration and is the end and target of a still active pilgrimage road, the Road of the Saints. As per the Irish Catholic tradition, St. Brendan the Navigator had first glimpsed the blessed lands that he later discovered on his celebrated 7 year sea voyage from the top of Mt. Brandon that is now marked by the said cross. There are also remnants of a small house (St. Brendan's Oratory) that are believed to have been used by the Saint himself. Many contend that the lands or isles that St. Brandon had discovered were in fact North America, most likely Newfoundland. Tim Severin reenacted the voyage in a 6th century boat replica as he believed it occurred.
