Dedicated June 22, 1929 Historic Gibraltar Island, long the summer home of Jay Cooke, financier of the Civil War was purchased in 1925 by Julius Stone, devoted friend of science and later chairman of the board of trustees of the Ohio State University, who presented it to the state of Ohio for the permanent use of the university to encourage biological research and teaching, to develop the natural food resources of our inland waters and to simulate additions to human knowledge. This island laboratory was named by the board of trustees in grateful memory of the donor's father.
