Bonne Nuit Harbour Jersey
Saint John, Jersey
The bay takes its name from a medieval chapel which was dedicated to one of the many guises of the Virgin Mary. While the earliest documents refer to the haven of St John, the harbour itself was built by the States in 1872 for the inshore fishing boats but it had been used as a landing place before this. In his survey of 1685, Dumaresq describes it as being used by boats that frequented the other islands. In 1736 two cannon protected the haven and a guardhouse and magazine were built for the militiamen who served them in 1835 La Créte Fort was built to protect the east side of the bay A guidebook in 1901 refers to granite from tie nearby quarry at Mont Mado being exported from here.
