The Oldest Vine in the World

Maribor, Slovenija

With an age of over four hundred years, the Old Vine is the greatest tourist attraction of the city. It still produces grapes and, at the same time, reminds of the history of the city, has been closely connected with and dependent on growing and export of wine. The vine in venerable age, also called Blue Kavcina or velvety black grapes, belongs to the oldest domesticated vine sorts in Slovenia. Its age was determined based on annual growth rings using the sounding method and by means of a microscope. In 2004, it was registered into the Guinness Book of World Records and therefore officially recognised as the oldest vine among all living vines in the world.
