Paasduin

Beverwijk, Nederland

People used this dune in the past to enlighten their Easter bonfires, hence the name of this dune (Paasduin means Easter dune in Dutch). The dunes here a so high and steep that it threatened to engulf the village if a storm from the south might sweep up. To neutralize that risk, people planted this dune with beach grass to stop this dune from shifting. At the south end of this dune behind this information board, you can have a view of an exposition called 'Een Zee van Staal' (translated: A Sea of Steel). This free from charge exposition opened in 1999 when the village of Wijk aan Zee profilated itself as 'Cultural Village of Europe'. Artists from villages across Europe made their sculptures there.
