Mashpee Petition 1751

Stamford, United States

This sculpture was designed by artist Jim Sanborn in the style of his iconic "Kryptos," located at the headquarters of the NSA in Langley, VA. The copper plates are engraved with the text of the 1751 Mashpee Petition in Algonquin, English, and binary. The petition details the grievances of the Algonquin people over the small compensation that they were paid when forced to sell the land to the colonists. Marble blocks along the walkway being the sculpture are engraved with the list of items that were given to the Algonquin people in exchange for the land, which they called Rippowam.
