Pools and Riffles
Ann Arbor, United States
These features are usually in the swiftest part or the current, as is true with Fleming Creek. Pools form near obstacles like logs or boulders, giving aquatic animals a cool, dark place to live. Riffles (shallow gravel beds) provide oxygen rich, silt-free places for fish and insects to lay their eggs. Wading is very destructive, and prohibited in these areas.
