On this site in 1885, construction of the nation's first permanent federal research laboratory devoted to the study of marine fisheries was completed. The research program was started in 1871 in temporary buildings on little harbour. This laboratory studies marine life of economic and political importance as part of the National Marine Fisheries Service, a branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is a Bureau of the US Department of Commerce. this is an official NOAA geodetic survey marker that has been accurately survey to determine its precise latitude, longitude and elevation. As part of the national spatial reference system, this market provides an accurate position used for transportation, serving, mapping, charting and other scientific and engineering applications. this market place by NOAA in 2007.
