Hereward the Wake Memoriam Statue

Bedford, United Kingdom

A monument on Bedford Embankment depicting the man who defended both Bedford and Ely from the Normans (1058-1067). Earl Hereward of Ely recused his title in 1061 and became known as the Wake after managing to drown over 100 Norman soldiers in the swamps of Ely. After finally deferring to William The Bastard, his lineage was refused the right to ever reclaim the title of earl.
