Chief Quipuha Statue

Hagåtña, Guam

Chief Kepuha or Quipuha, was the first Chamorro Chief to convert to Catholicism in 1668. He was baptized by Jesuit missionary Padre Diego Luis San Vitores and he granted the Catholic church a large plot of land to build the first church on Guam. In 1990 Governor Ricky Bordallo, convicted of corruption charges, chained himself to the statue and committed suicide by shooting himself instead of going to jail.
