During the time he spent at Harding F.W. Mattox (1909-2001) found himself inspired by Harding president J.N. Armstrong and his impetus to send missionaries to Africa. Instead of traveling to Africa himself, he was encouraged by Armstrong to teach at Harding and prepare hundreds for the mission field. As founding president of Lubbock Christian University, he strove to find the very best Christian educators to develop a school that could effectively produce strong Christian leaders. His wife, Mildred Form by (1905-1988), was a steady partner for more than 50 years, faithfully striving to grow Christian education alongside her husband.
