Horse Sculpture, Boreal

Chattanooga, United States

For over thirty years, Montana sculptor Deborah Butterfield has explored one of the most iconic images in art: the horse. She has created them out of a variety of materials, including mud, clay, and sticks. As these materials began to deteriorate with age, Butterfield devised a method of casting her sculptures into bronze. While Boreal may look as if it were assembled out of found pieces of driftwood, the sculpture is actually made out of metal welded together and cleverly finished to look as if it has weathered the elements.
