Old St Peter's Catholic Church
Boerne, United States
In 1866 Bishop Claude M Dubuis of Galveston sent a young French immigrant, Emil Fleury, to organize a church to serve Boerne and the outlying towns and army posts. Freethinker German townsfolk sentiment toward Catholics was extremely hostile, with threats of violence if a parishioner was seen in town after dark. Eventually, the town expanded out to the church and beyond. Today, the parish continues to flourish and serve a community that once saw them as a religious enemy.
