Lake Meahagh, once a malarious swamp through which a small creek passed was created in 1872. A dam was constructed creating a 97 acre lake of high purity and clarity. The Knickerbocker Ice Company purchased the lake and created a huge Ice House. The ice company provided 300 jobs during winter months when local brick yards were not operating. The majority of the 45,000 tons of ice were shipped to NYC.
