Carlisle Barracks

Established 30 May 1757 by Colonel John Stanwix of the British Army. Known as the "Public Works at Washingtonburg" during the Revolutionary War, it supplied much of the gunpowder, bullets, & cannon used by the Continental Army. In 1777 the first Army school, an artillery school, was founded here by CPT Isaac Coren. In 1838 the Cavalry School of Practice, first cavalry school of the U.S. Army, was founded here by CPT E. V. Sumner. From 1879-1818 the Carlisle Indian Industrial School was located on Carlisle Barracks. The U.S. Army War College, the Army's highest level educational institution, was moved here 01 July 1951. The historical buildings & markers for the Barracks & the Indian School are open to the public.
