Hôtel Dovalle

L'hôtel de Dovalle doit son nom au poète Charles Dovalle qui naquit à Montreuil en 1807 et fut tué au cours d'un duel à 22 ans en 1829 à Paris. Ce beau logis comporte notamment une intéressante tour d'escalier du XVe siècle, couronnée d'une pièce haute, accessible par une vis logée dans une tourelle en surplomb, d'où l'on domine la vallée du Thouet. Sur la rue, la partie ancienne (XVe siècle) avec sa tourelle d'encorbellement jouxte le logis principal dont la façade a été remaniée au cours du xvme siècle. Dovalle's townhouse gets its name from the poet Charles Dovalle, who was born in Montreuil-Bellay in 1807 and killed in a duel at the âge of22, in 1829, in Pa- ris. This fine dwelling notably ineludes an interesting 1ffh century stairease tower with a high room at the top, aceessed by a spiral stairease eonstrueted within an overhanging turret towering over the valley of the River Thouet. On the road side, the older part ( 19h century) with its corbelled tower adjoins the principal dwelling, which was altered during the 18th century.
