Red River Drive Historic Trail Plaque

Ritchot, Canada

Red River Drive Historic Trail Plaque that states: This roadway was used by the fur traders and was an Ox Cart trail from Upper Fort Garry southward to meet other trails to Fort Daer (Pembina) and on to Minneapolis. This route parallels the west side of the Red River. The river bank trees supplied the shelter and wood for the repair of the Red River Ox Carts. A Manitoba Highways map shows a survey (1874) of a right of way through these river lots and it was known as Pembina Trail. This road was asphalted in the late 1920's. In the early 30's the name was changed to Lord Selkirk Highway and assigned the number P. T. H., 14. This twelve kilometres is the most northern remnant of this historic trail. The portion within the city of Winnipeg is named Turnbull Drive and the portion within the R. M. of Ritchot is named Red River Drive.
